The production process of titanium dioxide involves several stages, starting with the extraction of raw materials from mineral ores such as ilmenite, rutile, and anatase. These ores are then processed through various methods, including the sulfate and chloride processes, to produce high-purity titanium dioxide powder. The sulfate process involves treating the ore with sulfuric acid to extract titanium dioxide, while the chloride process uses chlorine gas to produce a purer form of the pigment. This article was written by Kamilah Guiden and reviewed by Megan Meyer, PhD.
Description:
Some websites maintain titanium dioxide is inferior to zinc oxide, another mineral sunscreen ingredient whose core characteristics are similar to those of titanium dioxide. The reality is that titanium dioxide is a great broad-spectrum SPF ingredient and is widely used in all manner of sun-protection products. What gets confusing for some consumers is trying to decipher research that ranks sunscreen ingredients by a UV spectrum graph. By most standards, broad-spectrum coverage for sunscreen ingredients is defined as one that surpasses 360 nanometers (abbreviated as “nm” - how the sun’s rays are measured). Titanium dioxide exceeds this range of protection, but depending on whose research you read, it either performs as well as or slightly below zinc oxide.
The California plaintiff is apparently not the only one concerned about titanium dioxide. The European Union recently banned its use citing concerns about serious health consequences.
In the automotive industry, titanium dioxide coatings are applied to vehicle bodies to resist corrosion and to offer a lustrous finish that stands out on the road≤12

The committee could not finalize the assessment of some other flavoring agents, requiring further information. JECFA highlighted the importance of receiving complete data submissions from the sponsors for conducting the safety evaluation.
Lithopone 28-30%, also known as B301 and B311, is a white pigment that has been widely used in various industries due to its excellent properties such as high brightness, good weather resistance, and chemical stability. This pigment is primarily composed of zinc sulfide (ZnS) and barium sulfate (BaSO4), which are combined in a specific ratio to achieve the desired color and performance.According to CCM, many enterprises, which belong to the top exporting producers of TiO2 in China, will speed up their efforts to go public. Reasons are the strong rebound of the TiO2 market in China as well as the positive view on 2017.
Titanium dioxide as used in sunscreens is commonly modified with other ingredients to ensure efficacy and stability. Examples of what are known as surface modifier ingredients used for titanium dioxide include stearic acid, isostearic acid, polyhydroxystearic acid, and dimethicone/methicone copolymer.
Titanium dioxide (TiO2). Titanium dioxide is the most common white pigment used today. As a pigment, titanium dioxide is unique because it combines both high colouring and high opacifying capacity. This is mainly due to its high refractive index (2.7). Furthermore, titanium dioxide is an excellent UV absorber (it is used in sun protective creams). Some typical properties are: density 3.3-4.25 g/cm3; pH of water suspension 3.5-10.5; particle size 8–300 nm; oil absorption 10–45 g/100 g; specific surface area 7–160 m2/g. Most titanium dioxide is produced from the rutile (TiO2) or ilmenite (titanate of ferrous iron). Titanium dioxide can be obtained using different processes.
